Bob Sommer has taught at the University of California, Davis, since 1963 and has chaired four different departments there: Psychology, Environmental Design, Rhetoric & Communication, and Art. He has been a visiting professor at the University of California at Berkeley (Department of Architecture), the University of Washington (Department of Architecture), and Tallinn Pedagogical University (Department of Psychology). In fall 2001, he taught at the Tokyo Institute of Technology (Department of Built Environment).

Sommer is the author or coauthor of 12 books, including Personal Space, Social Design, and A Practical Guide to Behavioral Research: Tools and Techniques. The latter, which he wrote with Barbara A. Sommer, is now in its 5th edition.
