Collins is a doctoral candidate (ABD) in adult education/distance education at Pennsylvania State University with majors in adult/distance education and instructional systems design. She has also chaired the NAU/Web conferences and managed the NAU Virtual Conference Center.

With Zane L. Berge, Collins edited the three-volume series Computer-Mediated Communication and The Online Classroom, and the four-volume series Wired Together: The Online Classroom in K-12. She is the co-founder and original owner of The Interpersonal Computing and Technology Journal, which is now an official publication of the Association for Educational Communications and Technology.
