John C. Dutton

John Dutton has been on the faculty at North Carolina State University since 1980. He did his graduate work in economics at Duke University and received a PhD there in 1978. Dutton's undergraduate degree is from Harvard University. After graduating there in 1966, he served as a Naval officer for three years. Subsequently, he taught at the secondary school level and then returned for graduate work at Duke.

At North Carolina State, John teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in international business and international financial management, with a secondary area in business statistics. He also is co-director of the Hamilton Scholars, a dual degree program for undergraduates in business and international studies. His current research is in the areas of international finance and education technology. He has done work on forward exchange rate risk premia, on the theory of commercial policy, on international investment, on air cargo usage in international business, and on Web-based education and has supervised theses in several of those areas. His research results have appeared in such scholarly journals as the Quarterly Journal of Economics, the Canadian Journal of Economics, the Journal of Money, Credit, and Banking, the American Journal of Agricultural Economics, the Southern Economic Journal, Public Finance Quarterly, European Review of Agricultural Economics, and the Journal of Engineering Education, as well as in several edited volumes.

Dutton has developed and for several years maintained the Wachovia World Trade Index, a cooperative effort of the College of Management, Wachovia Corporation, and the North Carolina World Trade Association. That index is to provide to the public timely information on export, import, and exchange rate trends particular to North Carolina, Georgia, South Carolina, Florida, and Virginia. He has also consulted with the North Carolina Department of Commerce on international trade issues. His other public service activities include publications on international trade and business issues in such periodicals as the North Carolina State Economist, North Carolina magazine, and Business North Carolina. He is a state Board member of the North Carolina World Trade Association and member of the Rates Tariff & Legal Review Board of Foreign Trade Zone # 93.

John has two grown sons. He resides in Raleigh with his wife of 29 years, Marilyn Miller Dutton.
