James I. Penrod

James I. Penrod was one of the first dozen individuals to be named a chief information officer (CIO). Over a 35-year career in higher education, he has served as a CIO at four different institutions. He currently is vice president for information systems and CIO at the University of Memphis, where he also serves the College of Education as a tenured graduate professor of leadership in higher and adult education.

Penrod has consulted for some 30 colleges and universities and authored more than 50 publications on strategic planning for information technology, organizational change, and related issues. He speaks often at national and regional meetings. He is a former board member of CAUSE and EDUCOM, and he currently serves on the EDUCAUSE Nomination and Election Committee; he recently was named an EDUCAUSE Center for Applied Research Senior Fellow. Penrod received his doctorate in institutional management from Pepperdine University, a masters in biostatistics from Tulane University, and a bachelors in mathematics from Harding University.
