Alan Cummings was born in Sunderland (northeast England) in 1949. He was a businessman for 20 years before he began teaching full-time at Newcastle College (England) in January 1985. At Newcastle, he earned a Certificate in Education, an honors BEd, and an MSc

Cummings currently teaches information technology skills to managers in the hospitality industry. He also serves NCFE (an examination body) and Newcastle College Company Ltd. as a consultant on online assessment design and production.

Cummings is a member of the Hospitality Technology Association (HITA). His main interests are online assessment research and online distance learning facilities. He currently is researching the ability of computers to sign speech for the deaf.
